Biotechnology

The Professional Master’s Degree in Biotechnology, recognized by CAPES through Ordinance No. 486 of May 14, 2020, seeks, from the development of multidisciplinary projects, to develop management and conservation activities for genetic resources, from collection, identification, characterization and bioprospecting to the exploitation of the potential use of these resources for the development of biotechnological products and processes.

Thus, the Program seeks to enable professionals to act in the generation of innovative goods and services for the pharmaceutical, food and energy production industries through scientific activities to transform a biotechnologically important target (bioactive) into a viable product which will significantly contribute to improving the quality of life of the population and the sustainable exploitation of natural resources.

Holders of diplomas from Undergraduate courses recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC), in any area of knowledge that has interests related with the main subject of the Course – Applied Biotechnology.

The mission of PPGBiotec – FAMAM, as well as that of the Institution, is to offer educational services for the formation of autonomous and conscientious citizens, so that they can be agents of transformation of the reality where they are inserted, authors of the knowledge process and qualified professionals in tune with the demands of the contemporary world.

Thus, it seeks to enable multidisciplinary professionals to act in the generation of innovative goods and services for application in areas such as health, agriculture, food, bioenergy and environment, among others, through scientific activities to transform a biotechnologically important target (bioactive) into a viable product which will significantly contribute to improving the quality of life of the population and the sustainable exploitation of natural resources.

As a general objective, the PPGBiotec – FAMAM aims to provide professionals with scientific and technical knowledge in the various areas that encompass Biotechnology, especially regarding the industrial application, management and conservation of biodiversity.

In specific terms, the objectives consist of:

  1. a) Enabling the professional to select and use the most appropriate biotechnological techniques according to the study questions, as well as know the various data analysis strategies obtained through these techniques;
  2. b) Providing recognized competence to use the main existing molecular tools;
  3. c) Training professionals capable of acting in the analysis, development and production of products arising from bioprospecting;
  4. d) Qualifying professionals whose activities are focused on biotechnological techniques;
  5. e) Consolidating existing research groups in FAMAM, as well as favoring the creation of new specific groups;
  6. f) Focusing on the development of products, processes and patent licensing;
  7. g) Interacting with Biotechnology research groups already established in the State of Bahia, besides creating specific groups in order to expand institutional interactions and promote the establishment of partnerships and the development of network projects, strengthening undergraduate and graduate education.

The Program’s objectives are part of FAMAM’s institutional actions and strategic planning and are intimately conditioned to:

– Socioeconomic and cultural peculiarities of the State of Bahia;

– Technical and pedagogical characteristics of the faculty professors;

– The availability of material and human resources to support teaching, research and extension activities;

– The need to train professionals who are philosophically and attitudinally integrated with other professionals in the major areas of scientific knowledge.

The Concentration Area of Biotechnology Applied to Renewable Resources aims to develop management and conservation activities for genetic resources, from the collection, identification, characterization and bioprospecting to the exploitation of the potential use of these resources for the development of biotechnological products and processes. Thus, it seeks to enable professionals to act in the generation of innovative goods and services for the pharmaceutical, food and energy production industries through scientific activities to transform a biotechnologically important target (bioactive) into a viable product which will significantly contribute to improving the quality of life of the population and the sustainable exploitation of natural resources.

Line 1: Applied Biotechnology. Development of products and processes for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food and energy production industries using molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics, phytochemistry, microbiology and fermentation techniques, pharmacotechnical development, bioprocessing engineering and quality control applied to the development of biotechnological products. This research line focuses on prospecting and developing products and processes involving bioactive molecules, whether of synthetic or natural origin, with potential application in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food or diagnostic industries; besides subsidizing the search and production of molecules and macromolecules in the most diverse biological systems, in order to obtain value-added products (biopharmaceuticals, biofuels and bioenergetics) from renewable biological sources, using bacterial, animal or plant cells, or their chemical catalytic component in inherently clean processes, such as waste minimization and energy consumption.

Line 2: Management and Conservation of Biodiversity. Its main objective is the training and qualification of human resources in the area of Biotechnology applied to Renewable Resources, in order to safeguard and use genetic resources to face the current challenges of industries in the search for the development of innovative products and processes based on the identification, characterization and bioprospecting of regional genetic resources with high scientific and economic potential. Knowledge of biodiversity and genetic resources combined with knowledge of pharmacobotany, ethnopharmacology, population genetics, evolution, living cell culture technology, environmental microbiology (microbiomes), biosafety, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics and intellectual property will provide subsidies and will serve as indicators for the sustainable exploitation and conservation of natural resources, thus contributing to improve decision-making in the professional practice, focused on the real needs of the Recôncavo region of the State of Bahia.
